Dangers of Early Cord Clamping

Did you know that, it your baby's cord is clamped immediately, baby stops receiving life giving oxygen via the umbilical cord and will be deprived of 20 to 60% of additional blood volume. Waiting to cut the cord for a minimum of several minutes allows baby to receive many maternal antibodies, critical stem cells, hormones, and vitamin K. Loss of this volume of blood is equivalent of "subjecting an infant to a massive hemorrhage (cordclamping.com)." At New Life, as with many other midwifery practices, we generally wait a minimum of one hour to clamp and cut the cord. This ensures that you baby receives an appropriate volume of stem-cell containing blood. Delayed clamping also is thought to prevent conditions such as autism, brain damage, and cerebral palsy. If you desire a Lotus birth, we are supportive of that choice. If you have considered cord blood banking or donation, please ask us to tell you what the latest research reveals about the appropriateness of this practice versus delayed clamping. We want you baby to be exceptionally healthy and we will do our best to educate you and answer your questions about cord care so that you can make the best choice for your baby.
